All That You Need to Know About Lateral Patellar Instability | MPFL Reconstruction

Patella refers to a small rounded mobile bone we feel at the forefront of our knees. In case of any injury, the knee cap moves abnormally sideways rather than in normal vertical motion. Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is the primary ligament responsible for stabilizing the Patella. Any wear and tear encountered on this ligament can become a source of discomfort and brings instability to the Patella (knee cap).
Symptoms
·         A feeling of instability within your knees
·         Loss of strength
·      Pain while performing the sport activities
·         In some cases, patients encounter a visible dislocation of the kneecap
What is MPFL?
Medial Patellofemoral Ligament (MPFL) is a primary ligament responsible for holding the Patella in a normal position. When a patient is diagnosed with patella dislocation, it implies that his/her MPFL is no more functional. It can either be because of injury, disease, or insufficiency factors.
The MPFL cannot always heal or repair itself in case of patella dislocation. Although many patella dislocations can be treated without surgery, few cases need surgical intervention for reconstructing the ligaments.
MPFL Reconstruction by Dr Pranjal Kodkani
The conventional methods of MPFL reconstruction surgery require artificial implants for ligament fixation, large incisions for drilling and making bone tunnels in the knee cap. Such procedures come with risks and chances of complications. This conventional MPFL reconstruction is not suitable for children.
With the introduction of the Basket Weave technique for MPFL reconstruction, Dr Pranjal Kodkani performs MPFL reconstruction surgery in Mumbai and eliminates the risks and complications of conventional surgery. It is a minimally invasive procedure with a cosmetic approach for reconstructing the dysfunctional ligament using arthroscopy.
The Basket Weave method is recommendable for children and has been an excellent treatment approach to date with faster recovery, least risks, and best results without using any artificial implants.
Are you planning to consider Patella reconstruction surgery? Consult Dr Pranjal Kodkani to restore your knees and get back to normal on the field in no time.
